Education for Sustainable Development in NI4Kids
In today’s world, where environmental challenges are more pressing than ever, fostering a culture of sustainability among children and young people has never been more crucial. In Northern Ireland, the Education for Sustainable Development Forum (ESDF) aims to work together in partnership to develop positive attitudes and change behaviour towards the environment. As a part of Northern Ireland Environment Link (NIEL), we work to create a valued, resilient, healthy environment as a networking and forum body for organisations interested in the natural and built environment of Northern Ireland.
ESDF is encouraging schools, teachers, and parents to embrace sustainable practices and contribute to a more responsible future by enhancing the profile of Education for Sustainability (EfS) in the curriculum and extra-curricular activities for all ages.
Sustainability isn’t just a buzzword; it’s a necessity. Northern Ireland, like the rest of the world, faces environmental challenges, from climate change to the impact on biodiversity. By embedding education for sustainability, we’re equipping our children with the knowledge and skills they need to navigate and address these challenges. Our work aligns perfectly with the United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 4: Quality Education. This goal emphasizes inclusive and equitable quality education and promotes lifelong learning opportunities for all. By integrating education for sustainability, we not only enhance students’ understanding of environmental issues but also encourage them to become proactive, responsible local and global citizens.
Many schools are integrating sustainability in the classroom going beyond teaching the science behind climate change or the importance of recycling. The subject can involve fostering critical thinking, encouraging innovative solutions, and promoting a culture of respect for our planet. Through eco schools and green flag awards schools are already recognised for their continued contribution to greener education. For schools looking to dive deeper into sustainable education, ESDF offers a wealth of news, resources and opportunities for all levels of education. Our partnership with Keep Northern Ireland Beautiful called EARTH ***, is an innovative project that provides a platform for schools, educators, and communities to collaborate on sustainability projects. Launching in Spring 2025 its’s Northern Ireland’s environment sector’s new digital infrastructure transformation project and will be the hub for activities, actions, challenges, initiatives and events to drive engagement with environmental action.
Parents and guardians can also play a significant role. By staying informed and getting involved, they can support and extend sustainability through learning at home. From at home recycling to choosing eco-friendly products or taking a challenge on EARTH ***, small actions can make a big difference.
Unicef have created a parents guide to Talking to your child about climate change, it says: “Talking about climate change with our own children can feel hard for many parents. It’s natural to want to protect kids from harm and worry. But if your child is a certain age, chances are they are already hearing about climate change, whether at school, online or from their friends.”
“Unsurprisingly, children can feel many emotions about climate change, such as being anxious, frightened, sad and angry, which are very natural reactions to something as uncertain and devastating as climate change. While you can’t solve climate change for your child, you can help them discover the facts, know that they are not alone and find ways to take action.”
The journey towards sustainability is a shared responsibility, and we believe education is at the heart of it. By integrating education for sustainability into our classrooms and homes, we can empower children and young people with the knowledge needed to improve the future. With the support of the Education for Sustainable Development Forum and EARTH ***, Northern Ireland can work towards creating a greener, more sustainable future.
