Fixing Our Broken Planet: Interconnected. Grant applications open

Mini-grants, support packages and collaborations for localised Fixing Our Broken Planet (FOBP) displays, exhibitions and programming around the UK.

Fixing Our Broken Planet (FOBP) puts the Natural History Museum at the heart of the
conversation on the planetary emergency and creating advocates for the planet. FOBP uses
collections, science and scientists to create compelling stories about how human actions have
affected the natural world and where solutions might be found. The exhibition and wider
programme explores four key themes – The Food We Eat, The Materials We Use, The Energy We
Use and Our Health – to show why and how our relationship with the natural world needs to
change.

• FOBP uses science and engagement to foster dialogue, inform policy, and influence
change: individually and collectively, nationally and globally – through dialogue and
partnerships, helping to build a truly global movement of advocates
• The programme takes human impacts and solutions as its starting point and brings
different voices together to explore the changing planet through the lens of human
stories and societal challenges, including scientists, consumers, policy makers and
activists
• FOBP targets a youth audience (13-35 years) but with relevance to all, aiming to connect
broader audiences with relevant environmental challenges where they are to inspire
positive action
• Generation Hope is a programme which sits under the Fixing Our Broken Planet
umbrella. It is an annual programme of workshops, panels and events, around March
each year, that delves into the challenges and solutions for people and planet, created
in partnership with young people, for young people.

In 2023, we ran a sector-wide survey to shape the design of a UK-wide FOBP programme. Over
70 museums around the UK responded, and the results highlighted that while many had not
previously produced content on human impacts on the planet, all were eager to do so. The
survey identified key barriers, including funding, staff capacity, and knowledge of best practices.
Out of this, we launched the FOBP Community of Practice (CoP), a UK-wide professional
network sharing best practice on the planetary emergency to establish a community centered
around this shared mission. Now, as the CoP has reached over 200 organisations across the UK,
we’re launching an Interconnected package of tiered funding and support packages, which was
shaped by the survey and a consultation with our steering group made up of museum networks
around the UK. We have tried to make the process accessible and flexible, to suit the needs of
the huge diversity of organisations in the sector and the Community of Practice.
Introducing FOBP Interconnected: Mini-grants, Support Packages and Collaborations
Fixing Our Broken Planet (FOBP): Interconnected is a programme connecting people and planet
through exhibitions, displays and events. By combining contemporary environmental science
and thoughtful curation through collaborations rooted in place, FOBP Interconnected will create
advocates for the planet through a series of collaborative activity in different parts of the UK.
This programme is facilitated by the FOBP Community of Practice at the Natural History
Museum in London, a network for museum professionals to share best practice in
communicating the planetary emergency.
