Visitor Safety Group Managing Informal Mountain Bike Trails Workshop

Tuesday 3 December 2019

Tollymore National Outdoor Centre, Newcastle

Summary Description

This seminar and site visits will draw upon the experience of key experts from across the UK and Ireland to:

  • Gain the mountain biker’s perspective – why are informal mountain bike trail important
  • Outline the issues for land owners / managers
  • Outline models for engagement and managing informal trails – how land managers and mountain bikers can work together to potentially find solutions

Course Description

Mountain bikers are increasingly seeking new challenges and as a result there has been a growth in the number of mountain bike trails constructed without the permission of land owners / managers. This has been heightened by modern mountain bike design and GPS tracking platforms. This has resulted in a range of challenges including multi–user conflict, creation of potentially dangerous hazards and negative environmental impacts.

Course Content

This seminar will draw upon the experience of key experts from across the UK and Ireland and undertake a site visit to nearby Castlewellan Mountain Bike Trails to generate discussion in a practical setting. The site visit will be undertaken on foot so no prior mountain biking experience is required.

Refreshments and lunch are provided free of charge.

Why Attend?

This seminar and site–visit will be of most interest and value to land managers / stakeholders within Northern Ireland.
